To intervene in a building such as the Torre de San Andrés, an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 1949, and one of the most recognizable symbols of Anaga, requires an in-depth investigation of its history, from the motivations that led to its construction on the site, through for an exhaustive analysis of the problems and pathologies that the structure has suffered throughout its useful life, until its period as a ruin for the last 126 years.

This proposal is based on the maximum respect for the heritage asset, devoting most of its development to the study and analysis of the tower, as well as its surroundings in different extents, for which reason both the analysis and the proposal have been ordered in what we call S, M, L and XL scales; calling Scale S the perimeter currently fenced by the palisade, Scale M the Protection Environment of the BIC, Scale L San Andrés and its natural environment, and Scale XL the territorial area of Anaga.

PROPOSAL

The five arguments:

1 — Maintain the ruin as a symbol of San Andrés, a historical monument that has been in its current state for 126 years, that no one knows of in “one piece”, and that is thus represented in the different institutions in the area, such as neighborhood associations, the public school, or the soccer team. The existing structures with their pathologies are consolidated, ruling out the reconstruction of the Tower to its original state.

2 — Rehabilitate the Protection Environment. Urban landscape at the service of the BIC, a historical monument that has been in its current state for 126 years, that no one knows of in “one piece”, and that is thus represented in the different institutions in the area, such as neighborhood associations, the public school, or the soccer team. The existing structures with their pathologies are consolidated, ruling out the reconstruction of the Tower to its original state.

3 — The Tower of San Andrés as the gate of Anaga, a historical monument that has been in its current state for 126 years, that no one knows of in “one piece”, and that is thus represented in the different institutions in the area, such as neighborhood associations, the public school, or the soccer team. The existing structures with their pathologies are consolidated, ruling out the reconstruction of the Tower to its original state.

4 — The interior spaces of the tower generate the Visitor Center, a historical monument that has been in its current state for 126 years, that no one knows of in “one piece”, and that is thus represented in the different institutions in the area, such as neighborhood associations, the public school, or the soccer team. The existing structures with their pathologies are consolidated, ruling out the reconstruction of the Tower to its original state.

5 — Minimize execution costs, maintenance and ecological footprint, a historical monument that has been in its current state for 126 years, that no one knows of in “one piece”, and that is thus represented in the different institutions in the area, such as neighborhood associations, the public school, or the soccer team. The existing structures with their pathologies are consolidated, ruling out the reconstruction of the Tower to its original state.
